Over the past two weeks, I continued learning card throwing using only new media sources, primarily YouTube tutorials and the Reddit community r/cardthrowing. Overall, I was able to make significant progress in learning this skill. While I am far from perfect, my accuracy, consistency, and confidence improved noticeably compared to my baseline attempts from the first blog post.
One of my biggest successes was improving my accuracy. At the beginning, most of my throws were weak and unpredictable, often fluttering to the ground after a short distance. After consistent practice and applying techniques I learned from YouTube, my throws became faster, flatter, and more controlled. I was eventually able to aim at specific targets and hit them with reasonable consistency, which felt like a major milestone.
The biggest challenge I faced was learning the correct grip. Many tutorials emphasized that card throwing is less about arm strength and more about finger placement, wrist snap, and release timing. At first, the grip felt awkward and unnatural, and my throws actually got worse before they got better. However, after watching multiple videos that explained the grip from different angles and practicing slowly, the technique started to click. Once I overcame this hurdle, my improvement accelerated quickly.
Learning through new media technologies was extremely effective for this skill. YouTube videos were especially helpful because they allowed me to visually compare my form to experienced card throwers. Being able to pause, rewind, and watch in slow motion made a huge difference. The Reddit community also helped by reinforcing that struggling early on is normal and by offering tips that weren’t always mentioned in tutorials.
Below is a short video demonstrating my progress compared to my baseline. This video reflects both my improved technique and how much I learned through new media during this project. I was pretty happy with this project because it allowed me to learn a skill that i had always wanted to learn but never had any real reason to.
